In keeping with Article 37 of the 1986 Constitution, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has issued a writ for Senatorial By-elections in Montserrado and Bong counties to replace President George Mannah and Vice President Jowel Howard Taylor.
In the writ issued on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, NEC Chairman Korkoya mandated the two Elections Magistrates to conduct By-Elections on May 8, 2018 to fill the vacancies in the Legislature created after the election of former Montserrado County Senator, George Weah and former Bong County Senator Jewel Howard Taylor, as President and Vice President of the Republic of Liberia respectively.
According to the writ, nomination of candidates by registered political parties, alliance, coalitions and independent candidates concerning said elections is scheduled to begin on March, 15, 2018 and ends on March 27, 2018.
Article 37 of the Constitution of Liberia states that in the event of a vacancy in the Legislature caused by death, resignation, expulsion or otherwise, the presiding officer shall within 30 days notify the Election Commission.
The Election Commission shall not later than 90 days thereafter cause a by-election to be held; provided that where such vacancy occurs within 90 days prior to the holding of general elections, the filling of the vacancy shall await the holding of such general elections.
NEC said it received a communication from the Honorable House of Senate on February 13, 2018, informing it of the two vacancies in the Senate regarding Montserrado and Bong counties, in keeping with the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia.
