The National Elections Commission or NEC has said it needs 3.9 million United States dollars to conduct by-elections in Montserrado and Bong Counties.
The by-elections are as the result of the election of former senators George MannahWeah and Jewel Howard Taylor as President and Vice President respectively in the just ended 2017 general elections.
President George Weah was Montserrado County Senator while Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor was Bong County senator.
Article 37 of the 1986 Liberian Constitution mandates the National Elections Commission to conduct a by-election with in the period of 90 days to fill any vacancy at the legislature.
Speaking Wednesday at a news conference in Monrovia, NEC Chairman Cllr. Jerome Korkoya said since the submission of the by-elections budget to the Government of Liberia 26thFebruary this year, NEC is yet to receive any former response from the Weah’s administration.
Cllr. Korkoya said the budget is needed to meet with the constitutional deadline.
He added that an estimated 12-thousand temporary field staff including poll workers, gender mobilizers, civil educators and election supervisors will be required for the by-elections.
