The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have sent a congratulatory message to former FIFA, European and African Footballer of the Year George Weah for emerging President of Liberia.
Liberia National Electoral body in the evening hours of Friday, December 29, 2017 declared the presidential ticket football legend Weah and former first lady, Jowel Taylor winner of December 26, 2017 runoff election.
The former Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Chelsea striker swept 732,185 votes representing 61.5 %, while his 73-year-old challenger Joseph Boakai of the ruling Unity Party got 457,579 which accounts for 38.5 of valid votes cast.
Following a series of messages on Twitter on Wednesday congratulating Weah, 51, on his purported victory, CAF wrote on their verified handle: “Congratulations George Weah! Former Ballon D’or winner and Current President of Liberia.”
Weah’s first shot at the presidency was in 2005 where he lost to Johnson Sirleaf in the run-off.
He captained the Liberian side that reached two Africa Cup of Nations Finals– South Africa 196 and Mali 2002.
