FIFA President Infantino to visit Liberia

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will pay a visit to Liberia next month, say Liberia Football Association president Musa Hassan Bility.

The Liberia football chief said Infantino will arrive in the country on April 27, 2017 for the WAFU Tournament, to be held in honor of Liberia Chief Patron of Sports, Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

CAF President Ahmed Ahmed and all  members of CAF’s Executive Committee are expected to grace the the much talk about WAFU Cup, which kicks off in the first week of May.

“This is a huge event and then we expect lot of dignitaries to be here the President of CAF, the entire Executive Committee of CAF, the President of FIFA and we have extended invitation to the President of UEFA and the Asian Football Confederation,” Bility told FARBRIC Radio New Dawn Program on Wednesday morning.

LFA President has iterated that the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Cup or WAFU Cup wouldn’t cost cost the Government of Liberia a dime. “FIFA has agreed to finance the teams’ travel and we will get sponsors to handle the hospitality aspect,” Bility posted in Talk Football Chatroom on Friday.

Mr. Bility named Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Bokina Faso, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, as some of the participating nations.

WAFU unanimously agreed to hold its annual football tournament in honor of President Sirleaf as a tribute to her excellent leadership in Africa, at its Congress held in Dakar, Senegal early 2015.

The maiden edition of the tournament was scheduled for October 29, the birthday of the Liberian leader.

During his visit, the head of world football governing body will also break grounds for LFA’s new headquarters, which Mr. Bility said is a FIFA project.

He however did not state the cost of the project.

The LFA has been dogged by misapplication of FIFA funds, including US$ 50,000 Ebola Fund and US$ 500,000 the local football house received from FIFA as its share of profit from the 2014 World Cup.
